Hakka Specialty Tea

Péngfēng tea (膨風茶), a premium variety of Taiwanese Oolong, is a rare, high-fermentation summer tea. Harvested around the Dragon Boat Festival, its primary growing regions include Beipu and Emei in Hsinchu, as well as Toufen in Miaoli—all traditional Hakka settlements. Beipu, with its unique climate and highland terrain, combined with the expert craftsmanship of seasoned tea masters, produces an exceptional quality of Péngfēng tea.

A Unique Flavor Profile

With a bright amber hue, this tea offers a natural ripe fruit fragrance and a rich honey aroma. The taste is smooth, sweet, and unforgettable. Its appearance is characterized by plump, silvery tea buds, with a striking blend of white, green, yellow, red, and brown hues. The most vibrant leaves are considered the highest grade. Also known as Bai Hao Oolong (White Tip Oolong), this tea is a true delicacy.

A Tea with a Rich History

During the Japanese colonial era, a tea exhibition was held in Taipei, where Beipu tea farmers submitted two catties (approximately 1.2 kg) of insect-bitten tea leaves crafted using a special method. The Japanese Governor-General’s Office was so impressed that they purchased the entire batch for 200 Japanese yen—a fortune at the time (when the local mayor's salary was only 30 yen per month).

Upon hearing the news, the locals thought it was exaggerated, calling it "Péngfēng" (膨風), meaning "boastful"—hence the name Péngfēng tea. Later, the tea gained international fame and became a high-end export product. Another elegant nickname, "Oriental Beauty Tea," is said to have originated when Queen Elizabeth II was captivated by its exquisite taste and bestowed it with this noble title.
